Robert Patrick On For Gangster Squad

He's replacing Bryan Cranston

Were you disappointed that ever-in-demand actor Bryan Cranston has had to drop out of Warner Bros. ' crime drama The Gangster Squad? We have some news that might just soothe your troubled brow: Robert Patrick is in final negotiations to take over the role that would have been Cranston's. That part is laid back LAPD officer Max Kennard, a Texan whose easy attitude to life disguises his tenacious work on the job. Patrick is just the latest piece of casting on the film, which already boasts the likes of Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Michael Pena, Giovanni Ribisi and Michael Pena. Plus Emma Stone, assuming she locks in a deal. Based on a series of LA Times articles written by Paul Lieberman, Gangster Squad will follow the local police department's battle with crime and corruption and the formation of a dedicated team designed to keep East Coast mobsters (such as Penn's Mickey Cohen) out of the city during the 1940s. Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer is calling the shots from a script adapted by former copper Will Beall. The cameras start cranking in September.

CONTEST: Of Gods and Men DVD/Blu-ray Giveaway

OfGodsAndMen_BDDVD_box_art.jpeg The New York Times' A.O. Scott praised Of Gods and Men as "supple and suspenseful, appropriately austere without being overly harsh, and without forgoing the customary pleasures of cinema. The performances are strong, the narrative gathers momentum as it progresses, and the camera is alive to the beauty of the Algerian countryside." On behalf of GreenCine and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, you may enter to win the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack of what The Christian Science Monitor's Peter Rainer called "a transcendently uplifting tragedy." More on the film, now on shelves:

Loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996, OF GODS AND MEN tells a story of eight French Christian monks who live in harmony with their Muslim brothers. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps through the region. The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse. Should they leave? Despite the growing menace in their mids, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay... come what may.

To enter, email contest@greencine.com and include your name, email address, mailing address, and, if you're a GreenCine member, your username in the email, and "Of Gods and Men" in the subject header. Antoine Fuqua May Be Storming Las Vegas

Attached to a real-life heist tale

He already has a fair few projects bubbling away in his development cooker, but Brooklyn's Finest director Antoine Fuqua is not done picking possible movies out of Hollywood's larder. He's now attached to Summit's adaptation of John Huddy's book Storming Las Vegas. To give it its full title (deep breath here), Storming Las Vegas: How a Cuban-Born, Soviet-Trained Commando Took Down The Strip to the Tune of Five World Class Hotels, Three Armoured Cars, and Millions of Dollars, the book follows the rags-to-riches story of Jose Vigoa, who has been described as a modern-day Robin Hood. Born in Cuba, Vigoa was a Soviet army veteran who arrived in Vegas during the '90s, when the casinos were trying to push a cleaner image. He and his gang pulled off a violent, 16-month crime wave that saw him hit some of the biggest casinos and get away with millions. But because the businesses didn't want word of the crimes to damage their brand, a veteran Vegas police officer was told to track him down and keep the incidents out of the papers. Summit is working with Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura on the movie, and Fuqua will add it to his list of possible jobs. He's also busy trying to get action thriller The Tomb up and running alongside films about Pablo Escobar and boxing drama Southpaw, which may end up starring Eminem.

New Red Band Red State Trailer Live

Grab your nearest responsible adult

Podcasts, poster auctions, self-distribution deals, roadshows.... it's safe to say that Red State has taken the path less trodden to the big screen. But are Kevin Smith's innovations a glimpse of a brave new world for indie filmmakers or a one-off from a man who's often cocked a snook in the direction of Tinseltown? . If you're in the 'snook' camp, Red State's new trailer might just relight your fire. It's a lot more plotty than the elliptical teaser and expands into a full-on seige movie with shades of Waco. We meet the three high-schoolers (Michael Angarano, Kyle Gallner and Nicholas Braun) heading into the hinterland to meet their internet hook-up - only for their date (Melissa Yeo) to turn out to be a psychotic fundamentalist with a taste for young sinners.... . Crazed preacher Abin Cooper (Michael Parks), a David Koresh figure with a similarly sized arsenal, is the man whose idea of Christian faith deviates just slightly from the norm. We can't see Rowan Williams packing quite so much firepower under his cassock. And - holy handgrenades! - if that isn't enough, there's a new one-sheet as well. Honestly, we're spoiling you. {Red State one-sheet}. Red State is getting a UK release via E1. It'll be in cinemas from September 30.

Early Edition: Kevin Bacon Gets Evil for 'R.I.P.D.,' 'Gangster Squad' Picks Robert Patrick

Filed under:

A villain has finally materialized for Universal's 'R.I.P.D.': Kevin Bacon is in final talks to join the supernatural thriller about the Rest in Peace Department, a police force comprised of ghosts who battle spirits unready to depart this world. Ryan Reynolds stars as a recently slain cop who joins the force and proceeds to hunt down his murderer. Jeff Bridges co-stars as a gunslinger from the Old West who's been hunting spirits since the 1800s. The Robert Schwentke-directed film is based on the Dark Horse comic written by Peter M. Lenkov. [Variety]

Kathryn Bigelow's high-profile Navy Seal Team 6 project -- about the hunt for Osama bin Laden -- has been given a release date: Oct. 12, 2012, just in time for a big year-end Oscar run. Bigelow and 'The Hurt Locker' writer Mark Boal had been working on the Team 6's mission to get bin Laden when the Al-Qaeda leader was killed, necessitating a change in story direction (the film was to focus on the unsuccessful assassination attempts). During this year's Cannes Film Festival, buyers began to line up for the untitled project; it eventually landed at Sony. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Lady Gaga: Amy Winehouse "Gave Me Hope"

Lady Gaga: Amy Winehouse "Gave Me Hope"

During a Los Angeles radio appearance on Thursday, Lady Gaga shared her thoughts on the passing of Amy Winehouse -- and told the emotional story behind her power ballad "The Edge of Glory."

"I didn't know Amy (Winehouse); I just loved her so much," Gaga told KIIS-FM's JoJo Wright. "I was such a huge fan, and I was a go-go dancer in New York when she was really big. So Amy gave me hope."

This account came days after Lady Gaga took to Twitter to express her grief and sadness after 27-year-old Winehouse died suddenly -- possibly from alcohol withdrawal -- in her London home on July 23. "Amy changed pop music forever, I remember knowing there was hope, and feeling not alone because of her. She lived jazz, she lived the blues," tweeted Gaga on July 24.

While on the radio, the singer also shared the powerful story of how her grandfather's death led her to write "The Edge of Glory." Watch her emotional retelling below.

"I had never experienced death before in my family -- it was my very first time," Gaga recalls. "And my grandmother and grandfather were married sixty years, and my grandmother was a virgin when she got married. So there was this purity between the two of them. And I just remember feeling so sad, and yet I knew that when he looked at her and she looked back -- even though he couldn't really move -- they both sort of acknowledged that they had won at life, because they won at love with each other."

When Gaga and her father returned home from their visit, they began doing tequila shots ("I've got that kind of relationship with my dad," she notes). While they were reminiscing and drinking, she sat down at the piano and wrote "The Edge of Glory."

"And my dad never really wrote music with me, but he was always kind of around the piano when I was a kid going, 'Yeah kid, that's good! That note right there, that's the one! That's the lyric right there!'" says Gaga. "So I was crying and he was crying and I was writing this song, and he was saying, 'That's it, that's it.' So for some reason, I felt like I was able to express what my dad couldn't express, which was what was so hard was [for my dad] to watch [my grandfather] be on the edge, to watch him cross over but not be there yet.”

In the process of making the "Edge of Glory" video, Gaga had to mourn the passing of another man close to her: saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who plays on the song.

"Clarence was on the video, and he and I became very close friends and I viewed him as a father figure in my life," she says. "And he died the day the music video came out."

"I'm just glad that Grandpa and Clarence are up in heaven together," Gaga says with a smile. And with Amy Winehouse up there too, there's bound to be some beautiful music in the clouds.
